We have once again been busy working with West Wolds Slowing the Flow, creating scrapes, renovating ponds, building willow fencing and constructing leaky dams. B2B consultancy, Lewis Mills Construction, Special Branch Tree Surgery, volunteers and we at the East Yorkshire Rivers Trust have come together to achieve a variety of Natural Flood management works and Biodiversity improvements. The bulk of this, despite months of planning must be carried out in the last few weeks of winter due to the nature of the funding. It really is all hands-on deck and credit to all involved for making it happen in such a narrow timeframe.
Pictures one and two below show before and after the creation of one of three woodland scrapes near North Cave. The scrapes will hold water and reduce the flow into the stream during high rainfall events.
Picture three below shows Constructing Leaky Dams near North Cave. This is one of nine dams slowing the flow of water into the village.
Picture four below shows the site of two partially renovated ponds and two new scrapes close to Mires Beck in North Cave.
Pictures five and six below shows the Willow fence is protecting the margins of the stream allowing plant species to flourish without being trampled. This improves habitat for water voles, aquatic invertebrates and fish.
